PLAYA DEL CARMEN - So today was our first day in a while with fantastic weather.  It was also our first day of scuba diving!  We went with an outfit called Abyss Scuba and we had a great time.  We´re going with them again tomorrow for a couple of deeper dives, and then the next day for some diving in the cenotes (underground fresh water caverns).  THAT is going to be a blast.  Anyway, today we saw a bunch of cool stuff... a couple of rays, some scorpionfish, goatfish, 6 or so eels (two were giant at over 6 feet long!), oh, and one of these bad-larrys...

That´s right, a good old-fashioned bull shark!  The one we saw was 'just a baby' according to the dive master, but it was about 2.5 meters long.  That's plenty bigger than me, for those of you who can do mathematic conversions.  Bull sharks are one of the most aggressive in the ocean, but he wasn´t too interested in us.  He just gave us a passing glance (at a distance of 20-30 feet) and went on his way.  Good thing I took the sardine bits out of my pocket that we´d been luring the eels with.  Tomorrow we´re going looking for giant sea turtles!

well, the strange thing that i left out before was that the dive master was awfully eager to get us and himself the heck out of the water. he was telling the boat crew in rapid and somewhat impatient spanish to take the 'expletive' gear so we could climb into the boat. he said 'hay un tiburon something something!!'. somebody on the boat said 'pinche wey' and they hurried up. i guess you don´t want to be bobbing at the surface looking like a seal with a bull shark around.

Oggie Doggie would be a nice treat for Mr. Bullshark. Great picture... it was a good idea to reach outside the cage before taking the picture!!!
